Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in radio astronomy within the Astrophysics Group at the University of Southampton, to work with Dr Anna Scaife on the LODESTONE project. This project combines observational studies from multiple telescopes, both established and next-generation, to study magnetic fields in large-scale structures such as clusters and super-clusters of galaxies. Experience with radio polarimetry is desirable but not essential. Applicants should have a strong background in observational radio astronomy and interferometry, or in new radio imaging techniques and statistical data analysis.
The Astronomy group at Southampton (http://www.astro.soton.ac.uk) is one of the world's leading groups in the study of high energy
astrophysics. The group numbers key players in the next-generation of radio telescopes, eg MeerKAT (KAT-7), LOFAR, eMERLIN, and is looking towards the SKA.
The group has a strong record of research grant funding, eg from the European Research Council, STFC, NERC, the Royal Society and including Marie Curie and ESO fellowships. The group has eleven permanent academic staff (plus two visiting professors), fourteen postdoctoral fellows and approximately twenty PhD students, as well as a dedicated outreach fellow. We are amongst the most cited Astronomy groups in the UK.
The Astronomy group is part of the School of Physics & Astronomy, (http://www.phys.soton.ac.uk) which is ranked as a world top-30 Physics department. We are part of the larger Faculty of Physical Sciences and Engineering (http://www.fpse.soton.ac.uk) which brings together fundamental physics research with one of the UK's largest and strongest computer science departments.
