The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC, Tenerife, Spain) invites applications for ONE Postdoctoral contract on “Numerical Simulations in Galaxies” within the framework of the "SEVERO OCHOA Programme" (SEV-2011-0187); a prestigious recognition awarded to the IAC as a leading research institute in Spain, and supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.
The IAC is one of the leading research centres in Spain, covering theoretical and observational research and instrumentation across most areas of Astrophysics. The successful candidate will have access to all telescopic and supercomputing facilities in the Canary Islands, including the 10.4m GTC, and will be able to participate in the supervision of graduate students. Ample travel funding is available.
Fellows must join one of the following projects:
1) A multi-disciplinary collaboration aimed at performing a detailed characterization of the spatial variations and time evolution of the chemistry across the face of the M33 galaxy.
2) The participation of the IAC in the SDSS-III APOGEE project, a high-resolution near-IR spectroscopic survey of 100,000 red giant stars in the Milky Way galaxy.
Applicants should state in the application in which of the two above projects would like to be involved.
The candidate must have a doctorate in astrophysics/physics by the deadline for applications. Experience in any of the following fields will be highly valued: determination of nebular or stellar parameters and abundances, photometric or spectroscopic surveys, particularly in optical wavelengths in the case of the M33 project and in infrared wavelengths in the case of the APOGEE project. Observational experience and familiarity with model atmospheres and suitable analysis tools will be taken into account.
Remuneration: The gross annual salary is 32,886 €
Duration: Until the end of 2015.
The application procedure is explained on the web site. All documents, including the recommendation letters, must be received before the application deadline: November 30, 2013.
Details of the selection process, including the list of applicants, will be published on the web; successful candidates will also be informed by e-mail.
