Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position at Department of Physics, University of Helsinki, under the supervision of Prof. Alexis Finoguenov and Dr. Hannu Kurki-Suonio to work on photometric data of current cosmological surveys and participate in the Science Ground Segment (SGS) of the ESA Euclid mission.
The primary objective of Euclid is the dark Universe (dark matter / energy). The data analysis will combine deep optical and infrared images from the two instruments on Euclid, NISP and VIS, with data from ground-based instruments. The launch is in 2020.
Finnish responsibilities in Euclid, to which the candidate is expected to contribute, include development of data quality tools, software to simulate NISP data, and setting up the Euclid Science Data Center in Finland (SDC-FI). In addition to Euclid, Finoguenov is involved in galaxy cluster surveys, such as CODEX, and Kurki-Suonio in the ESA Planck mission.
The position is available from September 2014, initially for two years, renewable for a third year depending on performance and funding. Arrangements for a later start date can be made.
University of Helsinki is the leading institute in Finland in cosmology and astrophysics. Other staff includes Prof. Kari Enqvist, Prof. Peter Johansson, and Dr. Syksy Räsänen. Excellent computing infrastructure and generous travel and research funds are available. Candidates with experience in the development and/or exploitation of photometric data are encouraged to apply. Good computer skills will be required. The computing environment is Linux, Python, C++, XML/XSD. Salary is about 40 000 €/yr.
To apply, send a cover letter with a CV, publication list and a brief statement of research accomplishments and interests (not exceeding 2 pages each), as a single pdf file < 5 MB, to the above email address. Please arrange for 2 or 3 reference letters to be sent to the same address. The application deadline is February 10, 2014.
