The OCEVU Labex is inviting applications for a postdoctoral research associate position up to 3 years duration in astrophysics of distant galaxies and clusters of galaxies.

The successful candidate will work in a team including L. Montier, E. Pointecouteau, G. Soucail (IRAP, Toulouse) and G. Lagache, M. Limousin (LAM, Marseille), as well as members of other national  (especially IAS) and international institutes.

The project is dedicated to the characterisation of a sample of massive-forming halos, progenitors of today’s massive clusters, i.e., proto-groups and clusters. These structures form at a time (i.e., 1 < z < 3) corresponding to the period of the star-formation peak and maximum of black-hole activity. Candidate objects are drawn from a sample of ~1000 sources selected in the Planck all-sky survey at sub-millimetre wavelengths. About 20% have been observed by Herschel (OT and "Must Do" programs). Further characterisation relies on an extended multi-wavelengths program. During the postdoctoral position, particular emphasis will have to be put on the optical/NIR identification and characterisation by means of galaxy-populations properties (SFR, luminosity function, mass, metallicity, etc)

The successful candidate should demonstrate independence and initiative, and will be expected to take the responsibility of managing the optical/NIR part of the project. She/He will be expected to write the follow-up proposals, to conduct the data analysis and interpretation, as well as to contribute to the overall scientific goals of the collaboration.

Required qualification include a PhD degree in Astronomy, Physics or a related field. Attention will be given to experience in the field of galaxies and optical/NIR astronomy. Knowledge on galaxy clusters, structure formation and/or millimetre astrophysics will be particularly appreciated.

The position will be appointed for a duration up to 3 years (2 years, with possible extension for 1 year depending on scientific progress and achievement). The OCEVU collaborator will be based in IRAP (Toulouse). Regular stays at LAM (Marseille) are to be expected. The ideal starting date is October 1, 2014, but a delayed start date may be negotiated. The net salary ranges from 1960 to 2640 Eu/month, depending on qualifications and experience.
