The Millennium Science Initiative Institute on Astrophysics (MAS) is a new center for research in Chile that includes Astrostatistics as one of its main research lines, with particular emphasis on the problems arising from large surveys that explore the time domain, such as the LSST. The Institute is a large collaboration of Astronomers, Statisticians and Computer Scientists whose members are located at five Universities in Chile.
The MAS Institute invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the field of Astrostatistics to work along Prof. Susana Eyheramendy at the Department of Statistics of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC). We are seeking to appoint a scientist with interest in the application of probabilistic, statistical and data mining methods to astrophysical data and theory. While all areas of Astrostatistics will be considered, we are particularly interested in researchers with experience in data mining and/or the analysis of time series arising from large surveys.
The starting date for the position is negotiable. The appointment is for two years, with renewals for up to a fourth year possible, contingent upon satisfactory progress and availability of funding. The fellow will receive a competitive salary as well as a research budget including travel and hardware. While holding the position the fellow will be eligible for the 10% host country observing timeon all telescopes in Chile, including VLT, ALMA, Magellan and Gemini. The Department of Statistics of PUC is located in the same building as the Institute of Astrophysics of PUC, allowing for easy access to its very active scientific life in addition to that of the Statistics Department.
