SENIOR SCEXAO SCIENTIST – ID# 13708.
Subaru Telescope Project, NAOJ. Regular, Full-Time (Limited-Term, three (3) years in duration, with the possibility of extension), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Subaru Telescope, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $3,837/Mon.
DUTIES: Participates in the continuing development and scientific use of the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics (SCExAO) system. Assumes a central role in at least one (1) of the following parts of the system: optical design and development, software architecture and development, high speed/high precision wavefront control. Contributes novel ideas/concepts that enrich the scientific capability of SCExAO and assists the Principal Investigator (PI) with management of the SCExAO system. Pursues independent research related to high contrast imaging techniques and exoplanets.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: PhD from an accredited college or university in Astronomy or closely related field. EXPERIENCE: Three to five (3-5) years of experience in adaptive optics, high contrast imaging and astronomical observations, and data reduction. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of coronagraphy and adaptive optics. Ability to perform scientific and technical research related to adaptive optics and coronagraphy. Skilled in the design of optical components for coronagraphic and adaptive optics systems. Good written and oral communication skills in English. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post-offer high-altitude medical examination.
SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Previous involvement in development of scientific instrumentation including design and hardware and software development. Experience in maintenance and operation of a high contrast imaging system. Experience with simulation concerning adaptive optics system.
