The Astronomy Department, Universidad de Concepcion, Chile, announces the opening of a tenure-track professor position starting in 2014. Minimum requirements are a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics or a related area and a commitment to excellence in independent research and teaching. In addition to research and teaching, the successful candidate will guide undergraduate and graduate theses. He/she will be expected to teach in Spanish within 2 years.
The Universidad de Concepcion is the largest and most important Chilean university outside Santiago. The Astronomy Department currently includes nine faculty and 18 postdocs carrying out research in extragalactic, Galactic and stellar astrophysics using X-ray, optical, IR and radio observations and numerical simulations, as well as an Instrumentation Laboratory. Strong undergraduate and graduate programs exist. The position is open to researchers in all areas of astronomy. The successful applicant will have access to the 10% of observing time on all existing and future telescopes in Chile, including VLT, Gemini-South, Magellan, and ALMA.
