Applications are invited for a software-oriented astronomer or physicist. The main tasks will be the in-house user support and the maintenance for a variety of research software products for Branch I of the institute. Among these products are telescope control systems like SCS, a number of GUI-based astronomical databases, and the interfaces for established research codes like NIRVANA, CO5BOLD, iMAP, or PARSES. Operating systems are mostly Linux based. Additionally, researchers use external codes like YREC, MESA, a.o. and support for using these codes shall be coordinated. The applicant shall also create and maintain web pages for the in-house codes.
A PhD is formally not required. Negotiations to use the position towards a PhD at the University of Potsdam are possible and encouraged. PhD holders with a scientific record could expect a time share of up to 30% for personal research. Review of the applications will start March 1st, 2014 and continue until the positions are filled.
The initial appointment is for two years with extensions of up to five or more years depending on academic status, progress and available funding. Employment will be based in Potsdam, Germany. Salary is based on the German public service scale (TV-L) and depends on academic status and previous experience.
