Job Announcement Text:

The Institute of Astronomy (IoA), Cambridge expects to fill a vacancy for a postdoctoral researcher working on the high-redshift intergalactic medium (IGM) and cosmic reionization. The successful candidate will work with George Becker on analyzing the properties of the IGM during hydrogen and helium reionization using quasar absorption lines. A primary goal will be to explore the spatial fluctuations and temporal evolution of IGM properties during these periods. Additional, independent work related to the science case will also be encouraged. The researcher will have the opportunity to collaborate with the large number of staff, postdocs, and students at Cambridge working on observational and theoretical studies of quasar absorption lines, the IGM, reionization, and high-redshift QSOs.

The work will largely involve analyzing the Lyman-alpha forest in QSO spectra. Observational experience with QSO absorption-line data is preferred, although those with experience working with simulated spectra are also encouraged to apply.

Applicants must have a PhD in Astronomy or a related field or have submitted by time of appointment. The current salary scale is £28,132 to £36,661 p.a., (Research Associate) and £24,289 to £27,318 p.a. (Research Assistant) depending on experience, plus superannuation benefits.

The University values diversity and is committed to equality of opportunity. The University has a responsibility to ensure that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK.

Applications must be made via the on-line system accessible via the link above. Applications should include a CV, publications list, and statement of research interests and a CHRIS/6 cover sheet (part 1 and 3 only required). The names and contact details for three referees should also be provided. Referees will be contacted automatically following an application, but applicants are strongly advised to prepare nominated referees for the need to provide references (in response to the on-line generated request) by 3rd March 2014. If you have any queries about your application, please email pdrec(at) Further information is available at or can be obtained from Dr George Becker (gdb(at)
