Job Announcement Text:

A position as a science engineer is available at the Institute for Solar Physics of Stockholm University.

The Institute for Solar Physics is a research institute within the Department of Astronomy of Stockholm University. It operates the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST) on the Canary Island of La Palma. A major research grant finances a project aimed at investigating the dynamics of the solar chromosphere. The observational data for this project will be acquired with a new filter-based instrument at the SST (named CHROMIS) which will be developed within the project, and an existing similar instrument (CRISP). Both CHROMIS and CRISP are narrow-band filters used for rapid scanning through spectral lines. All observations at the SST produces large data volumes, but only the best data are transferred to Stockholm where they are treated with advanced image reconstruction software developed in-house. We work mainly in a Linux environment and use C/C++ and IDL.

The main responsibility of the research engineer is to develop software for CHROMIS and CRISP, and to take care of calibration and documentation of these instruments and their software. The overall goal with the work is to optimise the quality of scientific data and to simplify data processing for the users. Travel to La Palma and interactions with guest researchers is a necessary part of the work.

Candidates must have a Master degree in astronomy, physics, engineering physics, or computer science. Experience from work with instrumentation related to solar physics or similar astronomical instrumentation is required. Good programming skills in C/C++ and/or IDL and good knowledge in Linux are required. Proficiency in spoken and written English is necessary. A PhD is not required but will be considered an additional qualification.

The position is full time and is to be filled at the earliest possible instant.

The application should be written in English and should include a personal letter, CV and other documents describing the merits of the applicant. Provide details of two referees. We welcome your application in PDF-format, marked with SU FV-0130-14, no later than February 28, 2014 to: registrator@su.se. Please state the reference number SU FV-0130-14 in the subject line.

Included Benefits:

The position includes full social benefits, such as medical insurance and the possibility of parental leave.
