FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES

Department of Physics

Lectureship in Astrophysics

Salary from £37,756 - £45,053 per annum (subject to experience and qualifications)

The Department of Physics is making a strategic investment to expand the recently established research group in Astrophysics. The group is lead by Professor Mark Gieles and Professor Justin Read and comprises two lecturers (Dr. Oscar Agertz and Dr. Alesssia Gualandris), two research fellows and two PhD students. The group will grow with two additional research fellows and three PhD students in the coming months as part of an ERC grant. We are recruiting an additional Lecturer to support and build the new group. The Lecturer appointee will demonstrate a strong personal vision for research, combined with a significant and growing international research profile. We are looking for proposals in astronomy and astrophysics that have synergy with the UK and international Astrophysics research agenda and the new astrophysics group in Surrey.

As part of the written application, candidates should submit a brief Research Proposal (maximum 2 pages) that clearly describes a vision for a research programme at Surrey and which also addresses the needs of the wider Astrophysics community, including potential collaborations with the partner Universities of the South East Physics Network (SEPnet). The research should have synergy with the UK and international Astrophysics research programmes, and the work of the Surrey astrophysics research group.

Apart from astrophysics, the Department of Physics has strong research groups in the areas of Nuclear Physics, Soft Matter, Photonics, and Medical Physics. Within the wider University the Surrey Space Centre has an international reputation in space research and satellite engineering, hosting the first University based International Space Innovation Centre (ISIC), affiliated to the national ISIC facility at Harwell. As well as building a strong independent research programme, you will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate physics teaching in the Department.

Applicants can address informal enquiries about this position to Prof. Mark Gieles (m.gieles@surrey.ac.uk, tel: +44 (0)1483-683171) and/or Prof. Justin Read (j.read@surrey.ac.uk, tel: +44  (0)1483-683479). All enquiries will be handled strictly in confidence. For further information about the astrophysics research group visit http://www.surrey.ac.uk/physics/astrophysics
