The Board of Trustees of the Universities Space Research Association (USRA) invites nominations and applications for the position of President and Chief Executive Officer.
USRA is a private, nonprofit corporation founded in 1969 under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences. USRA's chartered purpose is the development and application of space-related science, technology and engineering.
USRA develops and manages facilities and programs conducting research, education and operations under contract with Federal agencies, including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense. Key to USRA’s capabilities is the role of universities. In 2013, researchers from nearly 300 academic institutions were directly involved in USRA activities. Universities are also a part of USRA's governance structure. USRA’s 105 member universities, all major research institutions, provide oversight as a public service.

USRA’s annual 2013 fiscal year revenues were over $100M. USRA employs approximately 475 regular staff. More than 70% of USRA employees have advanced technical degrees, and nearly 50% hold PhDs. More information about USRA is available at

The President & CEO provides leadership and direction to the organization and ensures that USRA is a viable and successful organization whose work is consistent with USRA’s nonprofit mission and the interests of the broader space-science and technology community. The ideal candidate will have experience managing a major research organization, at the highest level, within a nonprofit, academia, governmental laboratory or commercial setting; hold a PhD in a technical field; have a keen understanding of corporate financial information, contract capture, and marketing to and working with government agencies; a demonstrated track record of success in leading and growing a major research organization; and the clear ability to continue refining the vision for USRA in a changing and competitive environment.

To be considered, a candidate must possess or be able to obtain a top secret clearance.

The office of the President & CEO is located at USRA’s new headquarters building in Columbia, Maryland.

Diversity and inclusion are a part of USRA’s culture, and the Board of Trustees is committed to USRA providing equal employment opportunity to all persons.

USRA has retained Korn Ferry, an international executive search firm, to support the Search Committee of the Board of Trustees. The complete position specification is available at Korn Ferry’s website. Nominations and applications may be submitted online.
