Job Announcement Text:

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position to work with Prof. Guinevere Kauffmann at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Garching. The candidate will work on the scientific analysis of IFU spectra from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey, which is being carried out by the SDSS-IV consortium.  Unlike previous surveys which measured light only at the centers of target galaxies, MaNGA will bundle sets of optical fibers into tightly-packed arrays, enabling spectral measurements across the face of each of ~10,000 nearby galaxies. Applicants should have a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field, and they should ideally have experience with spectroscopic data handling, analysis, and interpretation.

Applicants should send their CV, publication list, and a research statement stating their interests and motivation for the position to  G. Kauffmann (, and arrange for three reference letters to be sent to the above address.  The appointments will be for an initial period of two years, with renewal possible up to a maximum of 5 years.

Applications will be considered as they come in, and the starting date is flexible. The MPA is an equal opportunities employer.
