NEO POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP – ID# 14275.
Institute for Astronomy. Non-Regular, Full-Time, Limited Term (Up to three (3) years in duration), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Institute for Astronomy, located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $3,416.00/Mon.
DUTIES: Participates in projects that may require observing at various observatories in Hawaii and around the world to obtain images and spectroscopy of asteroids and comets. Participates in projects designed to discover and study Near Earth Objects (NEO) primarily using data from the Pan-STARRS (PS) telescopes located on Haleakala in Maui. Performs spectrometric, astrometric, and photometric reduction of images and spectra. Obtains, modifies, and develops software as required for data analysis and research. Helps improve algorithms and techniques for finding NEOs in data from the Pan-STARRS telescopes, and thereby helps to improve the discovery rate of NEOs. Writes observing proposals. Performs research related to the funding source. Prepares results for publication and writes refereed journal papers.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: PhD from an accredited college or university in Astronomy or a directly related field. EXPERIENCE: Experience with computer programming, telescopic observing, image processing, the astronomical techniques of spectrometry, photometry, astrometry, orbit determination and propagation, and the preparation of scientific papers. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of modern programming languages such as C, scripting languages such as Perl and Python, and strong working knowledge of the Linux and Macintosh operating systems. Able to perform image analysis with Image Reduction Analysis Facility (IRAF) and/or Interactive Data Language (IDL). PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.
