TELESCOPE STRUCTURE MECHANICAL ENGINEER – ID# 14279.
Subaru Telescope Project, NAOJ. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Hawaii Observatory, Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT)-Japan and Subaru Telescope, located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: Salary commensurate with qualifications.
DUTIES: Monitors the progress of the TMT construction and records the activities. This includes monitoring cameras, visitor guide, etc. Attends technical meetings related to the site construction and mechanical design interfaces between the TMT Telescope Structure (STR) and the enclosure/summit facility. As a member of the Subaru Telescope engineering team, analyzes and evaluates the mechanical design of the telescope/enclosure system. Participates with observation and analysis of engineering data, and troubleshooting of telescope/enclosure system problems. Assists with mechanical designs and interfaces of new instruments, and maintains the related documents.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in mechanical or structural engineering. EXPERIENCE: Three to five (3-5) years of experience in technical field of mechanical engineering. At least three years of experience in scientific and engineering research projects, and data reduction in general. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Working knowledge of mechanical engineering. Working knowledge of computer-aided design (CAD) programs, as well as personal computers (PCs) and its off-the-shelf software. Proficient knowledge of industrial or scientific instrumentation, their interfaces, and their control systems, both hardware and software. Must possess skills for hands-on maintenance and repair of equipment according to instruction manuals. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout duration of employment and be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Good written and oral communication and documentation skills in English. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working at high-altitude telescope sites. Working knowledge of astronomical telescopes and instrumentation. Bilingual in Japanese. Experience with programming in C or Python.
