The appointment is non-ongoing, up to three years. The AAO has a scientific staff of 16 highly active and productive astronomers, with research interests spanning cosmology, galaxy evolution, galactic archaeology, and stellar evolution. The AAO Research Fellow will be supported by the AAO in developing their research programs, with 50% of their time available for research. They will be expected to assist in the operations of the Observatory for the remaining 50% of their time, providing observing support for visiting astronomers to the AAT and performing other support activities as necessary to ensure the smooth functioning of the Observatory. Candidates must have a strong background in astronomy, astrophysics or a related branch of experimental physics, and must have expertise in one of the following areas of observational interest at the AAO: optical spectroscopy, including the AAOmega multi-object fibre system, and the HERMES high-resolution multi-object spectrograph, high-resolution spectroscopy, near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, and future instrumentation for the AAT, Gemini, GMT, and other telescopes. Applicants with expertise in high-resolution spectroscopy are strongly encouraged. Applicants should arrange for three letters of reference to be emailed to email@example.com by the closing date for applications. The Australian Astronomical Observatory supports flexible working arrangements, including part-time positions where appropriate, and is an equal opportunity employer.
