The American Astronomical Society (AAS) is seeking to hire a Director of Publishing.  The ideal candidate would have a minimum of 10 years of experience in scholarly publishing management. Because the Society's publishing activities are distributed, the position may be filled by someone working remotely, at the discretion of the Executive Officer and under certain constraints (e.g. requirements for travel etc.).

The qualifications for the position are listed below:

  1. BA or BS degree or proven equivalent work experience and a minimum of ten years of managerial experience in publishing.
  2. Demonstrated expert knowledge of the scholarly publishing process including current state-of-the-art technologies.
  3. Strong management and leadership capabilities, with a focus on quality, speed productivity, efficiency, and cost control.
  4. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
  5. Exceptional time management skills.
  6. Ability to maintain a professional and team-focused approach when dealing with journal editors, Society Officers and Executives, and all others within the publishing and scientific communities.
  7. Ability to initiate and implement programs and projects in response to the community, editors and Society leadership.
  8. Demonstrated awareness of trends and policies in scholarly publishing and ability to maintain this knowledge.
  9. Must have knowledge of standard office software and the ability to learn additional software tools as required.
  10. Ability to execute responsibilities with minimal supervision required.

The Director of Publishing is Responsible for managing the AAS publishing activities in cooperation with the journal editors, publications board and Society leadership. Specific duties include:

  2. Serving as the top quality control officer for AAS publications, including setting standards and performance criteria for publishing services vendors and assessing vendor performance. Note that scientific quality is the responsibility of the editors-in-chief and supporting science-focused editors, not the Director of Publishing;
  3. Serving as the representative for the AAS publishing efforts to the scholarly publishing, library and professional scientific communities; including attending appropriate meetings and conferences as necessary;
  4. Working with journal editors, editorial office staff, journals data scientists, publishing services vendors and the astronomy community at large to establish desired work flows and content functionality and communicating these to the publishing services vendors; including leading technological development efforts;
  5. Providing oversight for the AAS eBooks program, including interfacing between the AAS and publishing vendors, serving as staff support and liaison for the eBooks editorial board, leading the development and implementation of this new effort through effective interfacing and support for the Society's eBooks publishing partner;
  6. Creating and implementing appropriate archiving and data preservation policies and implementing them appropriately;
  7. Preparing and presenting updates to the Society's Publications Board, Council and Executive Committee as required; and
