The publications of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) continue to advance and to ingest more data within their scholarly journals. The AAS seeks an astronomer to help process and manage the increasing volume of digital data and to integrate it within the Virtual Observatory framework. The individual will perform quality assurance of digital datasets provided by authors, and in some cases will assist authors in preparing datasets appropriately. The individual will also assist the senior data scientist in ways that advance the program's capabilities for publishing data.

The qualifications for the position are listed below:

  • Post-graduate study in astronomy, Ph.D. preferred.
  • Minimum two years experience with astronomical data analysis systems and techniques; experience with virtual observatory initiatives preferred.
  • Minimum two years experience with scholarly publishing process, knowledge of and experience with AAS journals preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required, good analytic abilities, strong customer service.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills required.
  • Ability to execute responsibilities with minimal supervision required.

The position responsibilities include:

  • Manage digital (machine-readable) data for AAS research journals.
  • Format machine-readable data as needed for AAS research articles.
  • Ensure coordination among AAS editorial team(s) according to on-going policies; ensure quality of digital data; communicate program needs and policies to authors.
  • Support authors as necessary to facilitate their own production of data sets.
  • Support R&D investigations for AAS journals program; assist with implementations, as requested.
  • A small amount of professional time will be available to pursue scientific research, per individual research interests.
