NEO FOLLOW-UP POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP – ID# 14303.
Institute for Astronomy. Non-Regular, Full-Time, Limited Term (Up to three (3) years in duration), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Institute for Astronomy (IfA), located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: Salary commensurate with qualifications.
DUTIES: Conducts telescopic observations of Near-Earth Objects (NEO) primarily using data from the University of Hawaii (UH) 2.24-meter telescope and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) located on Mauna Kea in Hawaii. Performs astrometric and/or photometric reductions on the acquired data, and develops software that can improve the degree of automation in the processing.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: PhD from an accredited college or university in Astronomy, Physics, or a related field (PhD candidates may apply but must submit evidence of PhD completion upon hire). EXPERIENCE: Experience with telescope observation of faint, moving targets. Experience with astronomical digital detectors. Experience with operating large, research-grade telescopes. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of issues involved in astronomical image analysis, error propagation, and reference star catalogs. Familiarity with various web resources in the Near-Earth asteroid field. Proficiency in programming languages, in particular, familiarity with the Fortran programming language for the use and modification of existing software. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.
