This position based at the Gemini South Observatory in La Serena, Chile and aims at providing specialized skills to Observatory development and operations projects and activities in the area of structured systems engineering. The Systems Engineer is responsible for performing systems engineering tasks associated with assigned Observatory projects and activities. The Systems Engineer will perform systems engineering for development and deployment of new instruments and instrument upgrades, including requirements specification, design analysis and evaluation, implementation oversight, requirements verification, and transition to operations. The Systems Engineer will also identify and pursue opportunities for operational improvements, perform knowledge management and engage with the larger Observatory community to promote industry standards and best practices for systems engineering and technical management. In all capacities, the Systems Engineer will be expected to work with a geographically distributed and multi-disciplinary team of engineers, scientists and operators.
Duties and Responsibilities: • Lead and collaborate on needs identification, requirements definition and requirements analysis, and perform requirements management and verification. • Lead project configuration and knowledge management, including change control. • Collaborate on project risk management and quality management. • Collaborate on design, implementation, integration and test activities including oversight to ensure adherence to systems engineering best practices. • Lead and collaborate on transition and project close out activities including oversight to ensure adherence to systems engineering best practices. • Maintain a working knowledge of systems engineering best practices and application within Observatories and similar environments. • Become proficient in Gemini systems engineering tools and processes, and instruct the larger Gemini community in the use of these tools and processes as warranted. • Supervise and mentor junior Systems Engineering personnel as needed. • Occasional travel as needed in support of projects. • Other duties as required, within the classification of this position.
Education Required: • BS or advanced degree in an Engineering or Science discipline with courses in pertinent fields such as systems engineering, aerospace engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics. • Professional certification in systems engineering desirable.
Experience Required: • 5+ years as a systems engineer or performing systems engineering functions. • Experience in both development and operations environments highly desirable. • Experience in Observatory environment desirable. • Experience working with geographically distributed teams desirable. • Experience with industry standard systems engineering tools desirable.
Skills Required: • Systems engineering expertise across the system lifecycle. • Leadership and management of technical activities throughout the system lifecycle. • Leadership and collaboration with people of diverse professions and background. • Excellent written and verbal communications. • Ability to easily grasp a wide range of engineering and science concepts and terminology pertaining to observatories. • Ability to work independently, manage multiple assignments simultaneously and prioritize activities as needed. • Ability to garner consensus and make decisions. • Fluency in English required, and fluency in Spanish highly desirable. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
