Job Announcement Text:

The MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research (MKI) seeks a science operations center manager to manage development and operations of the Science Operations Center (SOC) now being prepared at MIT to support the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), a NASA Astrophysics Explorer satellite scheduled for launch in 2017. The goal of the TESS mission is to identify extrasolar planets orbiting the nearest, brightest stars. Will support the TESS instrument manager and TESS deputy principal investigator with planning, scheduling, monitoring, and reporting on development activities of TESS SOC engineers and scientists at MKI, and manage SOC subcontractors to ensure that the SOC is fully functional and operational in accordance with the TESS mission schedule. After launch, will be responsible for effective staffing, operation, and maintenance of the SOC to ensure that high-quality science data products are made available to the astrophysical community in accordance with TESS mission requirements.

MKI is the PI institution for the TESS mission. The TESS instrument team is a collaboration between MKI and MIT Lincoln Laboratory engineers and scientists. NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center manages the TESS mission and Orbital ATK is developing the spacecraft.  NASA’s Ames Research Center is providing ground processing support for the TESS SOC.  The TESS (SOC) responsibilities include choosing scientific targets and instrument pointing directions, monitoring the health and safety of the TESS instrument, validating scientific data, managing ground pipeline processing, and ensuring that science data is archived properly.

REQUIRED: a bachelor’s degree in astronomy, physics, software engineering, or related field; and at least five years’ experience managing scientific software development projects. Experience with NASA ground data processing systems a plus.

Initial appointment is for three years with the expectation of renewal.
