POSITION SUMMARY

The Flatiron Institute is a major, new internal scientific unit of the Simons Foundation, focused on the computational aspects of a wide range of basic science. The newly established Center for Computational Astronomy (CCA), led by David Spergel, aims to become a focal point for computational astronomy around the world and plans to develop the computational tools needed for calculations, simulations and analyses. In steady state, CCA will be comprised of up to 50–60 researchers.

The CCA is looking for highly motivated individuals with a strong background in one of the following fields: astrophysics, applied math, statistics, computer science or cosmology. Flatiron Research Fellows will develop algorithms and codes for computational astrophysics and/or for the analysis of large astronomy data sets and work to apply these methods to obtain new insights into astrophysics. Generally, these positions are two-year appointments and may be renewed for a third year. The fellows will work on research programs supervised by the research scientists, group leaders  and the director. The CCA is in New York City and the anticipated start dates for these positions will be between July 2017 and October 2017.

Fellows are encouraged to disseminate their results through scientific publication, mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students, and participation in workshops and seminars.
