The Department of Physics seeks a dynamic and creative leader for the position of Department Head. The successful candidate will be expected to lead and build upon the Department's strengths in Cosmology, Biological Physics, High- and Medium- Energy Particle Physics, and Condensed Matter Physics while maintaining his or her own scholarly research.

The Department of Physics faculty currently includes 35 tenure-track, teaching-track, and research-track faculty members and a graduate program with more than 70 Ph.D. students. Carnegie Mellon has a long history of success in fostering interdisciplinary research collaborations. As such, the Department seeks candidates possessing excellent communication skills, interdisciplinary vision, and ambition. Working with the Assistant Department Head for Undergraduate Teaching, the Department Head oversees the educational mission of the Department, including the integration of teaching and research activities, as well as the graduate program.
