Job Announcement Text:

Applications are invited for two Postdoctoral positions at the Institute for Astronomy, in the Royal Observatory Edinburgh, to work with Prof Catherine Heymans and Dr Joe Zuntz.  We welcome applications from everyone irrespective of gender, ethnic group or nationality.

These positions are funded by the European Research Council (ERC) where our research programme uses “same-sky” weak lensing and spectroscopic surveys to go beyond Einstein with our theory of gravity.   This goal is realised by bringing together experts in theoretical and observational cosmology in one team.

Candidates for the first position, should have a strong background in cosmology and experience of statistical and computational analysis of cosmological datasets.   Interests in different modified gravity theories or constraining galaxy bias through galaxy clustering and/or weak lensing would be an advantage.

The second position is focussed on preparing for the weak lensing data analysis of LSST, developing analysis methods and software on precursor data sets such as the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS).  Candidates for this position should be experienced in digital image analysis and/or have a strong background in the manipulation of large datasets.

There will be the opportunity for all team members to join the KiDS Consortium and the LSST Dark Energy Science Consortium.

The appointments will be for two-to-three years, depending on experience, nominally starting in October 2017 with earlier/later start dates possible and welcomed.  Informal enquiries may be made to Catherine Heymans ([email protected]) and Joe Zuntz ([email protected]).

Applications must be made online at https://www.vacancies.ed.ac.uk under vacancy reference number 037905.  Candidates should supply a CV and research proposal of up to three pages.  Letters of recommendation from three referees should be sent directly by email to [email protected] before the closing date.
