We are seeking ambitious, highly-qualified postdoctoral researchers to work in the “Multi-scale Star Formation” Research Group led by Dr. Diederik Kruijssen at the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut of the Zentrum für Astronomie at Heidelberg University (ARI/ZAH). The offered position is funded by the ERC grant “MUSTANG”, and the group operates on the interface between observations (e.g. using ALMA and MUSE), theory, and numerical simulations of star formation and feedback during galaxy formation and evolution.
Successful candidates will join an active research team and will be expected to play a leading role in answering key open questions in the areas of star formation and feedback during galaxy evolution. One of the main goals of this postdoctoral position is to constrain the cloud-scale physics of star formation and feedback across cosmic time using novel observational techniques developed by the group. We particularly invite applications from candidates with experience in mm/sub-mm observations, IFU spectroscopy, ISM physics, molecular cloud physics, star formation and feedback, and/or galaxy evolution.
Successful candidates will have access to state-of-the-art observational facilities. Heidelberg is one of the major astronomy hubs in Europe and provides a vibrant and leading research environment. The group has strong collaborative ties with the other groups at the ZAH, as well as the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) and the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS).
Applicants should have a PhD in astronomy or a related field and a solid background in (a subset of) the aforementioned areas. The appointment will be for an initial period of 2 years with likely extensions up to 5 years, subject to performance. The starting date is expected to be in summer/autumn 2017, but can be negotiated. The position is funded by the European Research Council according to the German public service scale (TV-L E13). Generous funds will be provided for travel, guests, computing, and publications.
