IRAM seeks an experienced observational astronomer as station manager for the IRAM 30-meter telescope (Pico Veleta and Granada, Spain).
The IRAM 30-meter radio telescope is a world leading facility in the frequency range from 70 to 370 GHz. With its unique instruments EMIR, HERA and NIKA2 it is a very important player in the field and produces hundreds of scientific publications per year. The 30m telescope is also a crucial facility to generate complementary short-spacing and wide-field data for NOEMA.
The primary duties of the station manager include:
· Operate the observatory, including the responsibility for the local scientific, technical and administrative staff (~30 persons) but excluding the telescope scheduling.
· Organize maintenance and local support for technical upgrades.
· Evaluate annual budget needs for the operation of the observatory.
· Stimulate, trigger and guide local hardware and software developments, and scientific research.
· Stimulate and support the development of next generation instruments.
· Support work and meetings of the IRAM Science Advisory Committee and IRAM Program Committee.
The 30-m station manager directly reports to the IRAM direction.
The successful candidate should have a solid scientific track record and at least one leading experience in scientific or technical project management. Very good social skills, including the ability to communicate and work in an international working environment, are mandatory. A background in radio-or mm/submm astronomy is an asset.
The position is for a 3 years initial term with possible extension, and is open as of January 01, 2017.
