Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Experimental Very-High-Energy Gamma-Ray Astrophysics (2 posts)

Astrophysics, Denys Wilkinson Building, Keble Road, Oxford

Grade 7: £31,076 - £38,183 p.a.

The Department of Physics invites applications for two posts in the Oxford Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) group, reporting to the group leader, Dr Garret Cotter. One postholder will work on data analysis techniques and software for the Gamma Cherenkov Telescope for CTA. The other postholder will work on the pre-production camera for the Gamma Cherenkov Telescope for CTA. Both postholders provide guidance to less experienced members of the research group, including postdocs, research assistants, technicians, and PhD and project students.

Both postholders will manage their own academic research and administrative activities. This involves small scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines. They will also adapt existing and develop new scientific techniques and experimental protocols, test hypotheses and analyse scientific data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as appropriate, and contribute ideas for new research projects.

The appointments are fixed-term until 30 June 2018, and are based in Oxford Astrophysics. The successful candidates should either hold a PhD in the field of experimental very-high-energy gamma-ray astrophysics, or have recently submitted their thesis in this area. They will have experience in instrumentation for Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes/experience in data analysis techniques and software for Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes, and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes. They will also have the ability to manage their own academic research and associated activities, previous experience of contributing to publications/presentations, the ability to contribute ideas for new research projects and research income generation, and excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings.

Only applications received by 12.00 midday on 3 February 2017 can be considered.
