Job Announcement Text:

The MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research (MKI) seeks a research scientist position in the area of computational science and exoplanets. The candidate will be expected to participate in validation activities of all data products, covering both pre-launch and during the prime mission phase associated with the MKI-led Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), which is scheduled for launch by NASA in 2017.

TESS is expected to discover thousands of exoplanets in orbit around the brightest stars in the sky. This first-ever space borne all-sky transit survey of the solar neighborhood will identify planets ranging from Earth-sized to gas giants, around a wide range of stellar types and orbital distances.

Position is based at MIT and also involves spending a significant amount of time at NASA Ames Research Center. Position will provide time to carry out self-motivated and collaborative exoplanet research in an environment that includes TESS and MIT research scientists, astronomers, and engineers developing and operating high-precision optical CCD photometers for space borne instruments. Research collaborators also include active participants in the MIT Department of Physics and Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences, as well as members of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

REQUIRED: a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or related field, with previously demonstrated initiative and experience in working independently. Qualified applicants should submit a CV, publications list and statement of research interests to Academic Jobs Online (https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/7389) and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be uploaded to the site.  Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

Initial appointment is for two years, renewable for a third depending on performance and funding.

U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required.

MIT is an equal employment opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment and will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, disability, age, genetic information, veteran status, ancestry, or national or ethnic origin.
