Theoretical and Computational Astrophysics Scientist

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. We are seeking a Theoretical and Computational Astrophysics Scientist to join the Nuclear and Particle Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology (T-2) group. In this position you will lead research in theoretical and computational astrophysics.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead research in theoretical and computational astrophysics, particularly in the areas of multi-messenger and time-domain astrophysics, including multi-physics and multi-scale studies of black hole accretion, astrophysical disks and jets, gravitational wave sources, planet formation, multiphase dynamics in stellar, galactic and cluster environments, astrophysical particle acceleration, transport and turbulence
  • Establish and sustain your own competitive research portfolio, publish peer-reviewed journals and present your research at conferences and workshops
  • Recruit and mentor students and postdocs

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university
  • 4+ years of related experience
  • Demonstrated experience in carrying out independent research in astrophysics or related fields and conducting theory and modeling of astrophysics problems that are related to observations
  • Demonstrated ability to execute projects and publish high impact results
  • Ability to work with varying levels of internal and external personnel, as well as outside organizations
  • Proven success in formulating and presenting scientific results to technical audiences
  • Ability to mentor junior staff, peers and students

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with performing astrophysical fluid, plasma and radiation simulations
  • Familiarity with modern observations and frontiers of astrophysics research
  • Experience obtaining research funding and leading scientific projects
  • Ph.D. in astrophysics, theoretical physics or related fields and 2 years of postdoctoral research experience
