Job Description

UCL Physics and Astronomy

Research Associate in Cosmic Reionisation

The appointment will be full time on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £34,056 - £41,163 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.

Professor Richard Ellis holds a ERC Advanced Grant whose main goal is to improve our understanding of when cosmic reionisation occurred, as well as to determine the role that early galaxies played in driving this process. The programme is primarily observational and uses spectrographs on large ground and space-based telescopes to address the nature of the ionising radiation in distant galaxies. A major initiative in the group is preparing for exploitation of the James Webb Space telescope due for launch in 2018. The work complements similar observational initiatives being undertaken at UCL with interferometric studies of the intergalactic medium using LOFAR.
The successful candidate will work alongside other researchers in Professor Ellis’ group including members undertaking numerical simulations and radiative transfer calculations to interpret the observations, and will interact with other research faculty members with interests in cosmology, gravitational lensing and galaxy evolution including Filipe Abdalla, Benjamin Joachimi, Ofer Lahav, Andrew Pontzen, Hiranya Peiris and Amelie Saintonge.

This position is funded for 3 years in the first instance and is available starting September 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in Astrophysics and will take the lead in planning, executing and analysing the necessary spectroscopic observations of faint galaxies.

Observational experience with large ground-based telescopes and competence in astronomical data processing and computing are essential.
