Columbia University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist in solar physics, at the Columbia Astrophysics Laboratory. The successful candidate will join the group of Drs. Michael Hahn and Daniel Wolf Savin. This position will investigate the physical processes that accelerate the solar wind from within coronal holes and at their boundaries through observational analysis of solar images and spectra. The successful candidate will have a background in data analysis, spectroscopy, Fourier methods, image analysis (such as coronal hole detection), magnetic field extrapolation, and an understanding of both solar physics and basic plasma physics. They will have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Plasma Physics, Astrophysics, Solar Physics, or a related discipline, and a strong background in at least some of the areas listed above, proven research ability, and evidence of future research potential. They are expected to be able to work well independently as well as cooperatively with a team. Demonstrated written and oral communication skills and experience programming in IDL or a related language are highly desirable. The appointment will be initially for one year with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional years; this is contingent upon the availability of funds and mutual satisfaction.
