Your Role & Responsibilities:

The Associate Analyst for Science Operations position is in the Observation Planning Branch (OPB) in the Science Operations and Engineering Division (SCOPE) at STScI. An Associate Analyst for Science Operations supports the JWST and HST. The members of OPB prepare the science, engineering, and calibration programs for long-range planning and short-term scheduling on the observatories. This team interacts with and provides customer support to the international science community to help them develop their astronomical science observations. You will support the development, implementation and flight preparation of JWST and HST observing programs. You will provide assistance to the JWST and HST users from acceptance notification through program execution. Project goals include verification, validation, implementation and scheduling assessments of assigned observing programs while ensuring all operational databases correctly reflect program status.

Your Qualifications:

Qualified applicants required knowledge, skills and abilities include:

  • Ability to work independently and carry through assigned tasks
  • Ability to formulate and resolve problems through research and application of standard scientific, mathematical and computational skills and techniques
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships, both internally and externally
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail and follow-through as required
  • Capacity to work in and actively contribute to a team work environment
  • Ability to work various shift times to cover 24/7 activities during JWST operations rehearsals, and during commissioning, through 6 months after launch
  • Candidate must be a US citizen or Permanent Resident. ITAR clearance is required.

Education:

Applicants require a minimum of a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Astronomy, Physics or in a related field. Substitution of additional relevant education or experience for stated qualifications may be considered.

Experience:

A minimum of six months (Master’s) to one year (Bachelor’s) experience in technical support or spacecraft operations activities is preferred, but not required. Experience in planning and executing astronomical observations desirable. The starting salary is commensurate to the candidate’s education and experience.
