Job Description

Applications are invited for two Postdoctoral Research Assistants to perform research on the history and dynamics of the Milky Way with James Binney, John Magorrian and Ralph Schoenrich at the Rudolf Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics. The positions are supported from the Oxford Astrophysics STFC consolidated grant.

The posts are available for a fixed-term period of 2 years starting between 1 April 2019 and 1 December 2019, with possible extension for a third year.

Each PDRA will take responsibility for one of the following research themes:

1) Producing dynamical models of the collisionless (stars and dark matter) content of our Galaxy;

2) Producing a 4-dimensional map of the Galaxy's interstellar medium and incorporating this map into models of the collisionless components;

3) Developing evolutionary models to piece together the history of the Milky Way.

Postholders are expected to conduct research in collaboration with the grant holders (Binney, Magorrian and Schoenrich). Duties will include carrying out research in theoretical astrophysics within the general areas supported by the STFC grant; related tasks will include collaborating in the preparation of reports and journal articles, presenting papers at conferences and workshops, and representing the group at meetings/seminars. The postholders will have the opportunity to teach. The successful candidates should hold, or be close to completion of a PhD/DPhil in physics, or a closely related field. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable: stellar evolution, stellar dynamics, physical cosmology, ISM physics, Bayesian inference.

Please direct enquiries about the role to one of the grant holders:[email protected], [email protected], [email protected].
