Job Description

The IT Systems Engineer will configure and operate IT equipment, and provide onsite and remote support to our users who have critical response time requirements for developing the LSST to enable astronomical research.  You will be required to work independently or as part of a team to and troubleshoot IT systems problems over the phone/onsite or via remote access.  The position may require out of normal office hour duties in support of LSST construction, integration, and commissioning.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, deploys, configures, tests, and maintains general services servers (DNS, DHCP, Radius, LDAP/AD systems and other required services.)
  • Defines IT equipment standard configurations and assists in procurement of equipment.
  • Designs and develops DevOps infrastructure deployment/provisioning.
  • Designs and develops IT service and equipment monitoring and reporting tools.
  • Develops and maintains IT configuration management solutions.
  • Develops test automation frameworks in collaboration with rest of the team.
  • Helps tune performance and ensure high availability of IT infrastructure.
  • Creates tools to help teams make the most out of the available infrastructure. 

Education

  • University degree or equivalent in applicable subject. Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Redhat or Equivalent certification.

Experience

  • At least 5 years of IT experience in similar positions. Technical proficiencies including, but not limited to:
  • Virtualization technologies, such as Xen, Vmware, KVM, Kubernetes, docker
  • Cloud Computing technology
  • Anti-Virus management
  • Authentication Services
  • VPN systems

Skills

  • Experience with Linux servers in virtualized environments.
  • Familiarity with the fundamentals of Linux scripting languages.
  • Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining services such as Bind, Apache, MySQL, nginx.
  • Strong grasp on DevOps concepts and configuration management tools, such as Puppet.
  • Familiarity with load balancing, firewalls.
  • Proficient with network tools such as iptables, Linux IPVS, HAProxy, Cactii, Perfsonar, Solarwinds.
  • Ability to build and monitor services on production servers
  • Knowledge of servers and switches along with basic hardware troubleshooting and replacements.
  • Working knowledge of Windows OS, MacOS strongly desired
  • Basic level of Cybersecurity management
  • Backup and Disaster Recovery planning

  • Must possess – 1) ability to read and understand instructions, drawings, safety guides, and other written materials necessary to perform job; 2) sufficient visual capacity to perform the applicable functions without assistance of visual aids other than eye contacts or eye glasses; 3) sufficient spoken aural capacity to hear and understand instructions, warning bells, fire alarms, or shouted instructions without assistance of auditory aids other than a hearing aid; and 4) ability to impart information orally so that others understand and can respond appropriately.
  • Must be able to operate a four-wheel drive vehicle on rough roads in mountainous terrain.
  • Must be willing to support observing systems after normal working hours.
  • Some travel may be necessary in or outside the United States and Chile.

  • Cerro Pachon: Ability to work at 8,900’
  • Cerro Tololo: Ability to work at 7,300’
