Job Description

The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) is dedicated to astrophysical questions ranging from the exploration of our Sun to the evolution of the cosmos. Key aspects are cosmic magnetic fields and extragalactic astrophysics, supported by the development of research technology in the fields of spectroscopy, robotic telescopes, and e-science. The institute is located in the beautiful Potsdam-Babelsberg area, at the southwestern border of the Berlin metropolitan area. The AIP continues the tradition of the Astrophysical Observatory Potsdam and the Berlin Observatory (founded 1700) and has about 200 employees.

For the reinforcement of the section Milky Way and the Local Volume we are looking to fill a

Postdoctoral Position (m/f/d)

on Milky Way formation and evolution, starting in April 2022 or later.

The Position:

The successful candidate will work with Dr. Ivan Minchev under the DFG funded project “Constraining the structure and history of the Milky Way disk using Gaia”. They will also become part of the Milky Way and the Local Volume section and collaborate with other researchers at the AIP. The nominal starting date is April 2022, but this is subject to individual arrangements. The position is to be filled for a period of 2+1 years based on available funding and performance.

Requirements:

Candidates with a theoretical background in Galactic dynamics or chemo-dynamics and with an interest in the connection with the observations are encouraged to apply. The project is aimed at modeling the data from ESA’s Gaia mission in combination with large spectroscopic surveys, such as APOGEE, SDSS-V’s MWM, and the first internal data release of the 4MIDABLE-LR survey (www.4most.eu). Experience in working with large-survey data is highly desirable.

Application:

Applications should be submitted (as a single PDF attachment) by January 15, 2022 to

[email protected]

and should consist of

1. Curriculum Vitae,
2. List of publications,
3. Statement of research interests (no more than 3 pages).

- Applicants should also arrange to have three letters of reference sent to the above email address, by the same deadline.

- Applications received before 15.01.2021 will be given full consideration. However, later applications may be considered until the position is filled.

Equal opportunities are an integral part of personnel and organisational development at the AIP, therefore applications from men and women are equally welcome. People with disabilities will be given preferential consideration if they are equally qualified and skilled.

Your application documents will be kept for at least three months after completion of the appointment process. As a rule, your documents will be made available to a selection committee and to the committees and officers to be involved.
