Announcement
Job Announcement Text:

The University of Wyoming, through the Department of Physics and Astronomy, operates the Wyoming Infrared Observatory (WIRO) and its 2.3-meter telescope on Mt. Jelm, just outside Laramie, WY. WIRO currently features an optical instrumentation suite including a long-slit spectrograph, a prime-focus imager, and a polarimeter. We will add an optical high-resolution spectrograph in the near future. Solely controlled by UW, WIRO has made its impact in recent years with time-series observations challenging to carry out at other facilities.

We are seeking a WIRO engineer, with a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a closely related field (e.g., astronomy or physics), and at least two years experience, to join the close-knit staff. The position is ideal for a flexible jack-of-all-trades, who can help maintain and enhance WIRO operations. The position supports servicing and maintenance of the WIRO telescope and dome, its control systems, and also the mechanical infrastructure. Troubleshooting and repair of failures, as well as observatory upgrades, are a primary role. The job requires time in the office, lab, and observatory, both indoors and outdoors, with both mechanical and electrical systems, software and hardware. The position requires frequent trips to Jelm Mountain and is on-call for observatory support nights and weekends as needed. Additionally, the job occasionally requires lifting, climbing, and flexibility. Ideally, the applicant will also possess attention to detail, appropriate caution, and a can-do attitude that makes them capable of working with faculty and students to solve problems. There is the opportunity to build new systems and to work on new instruments in addition to maintaining existing equipment.

Desirable experience includes previous work in an astronomical observatory or a similar scientific facility. Experience programming in C or similar coding language and using the Linux operating system is also a plus.

Laramie has a population of 31,000, plus some 14,000 UW students. Nestled in the Rockies, the elevation is 7200 feet. Driving time to Fort Collins, CO is one hour and a little over two hours to Denver. The opportunities for outdoor recreation are outstanding; including hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, mountain biking, snowshoeing, skiing (both downhill and cross-country), and climbing.
