Job Description

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University is seeking applicants for a Postdoctoral Research Associate. The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with Prof. Jake Simon and join a rapidly growing planet formation group at Iowa State University.  The researcher will work on numerical and theoretical studies in the general area of planet formation, with possible focus areas to include protoplanetary disk physics, structure, and evolution and planetesimal formation. They will run simulations wtih the Athena and Athena++ gas dynamics code on both local HPC facilities and on XSEDE supercomputers. Additional responsibilities include writing up results in peer-reviewed publications and presenting their work at conferences.  There may also be opportunities to co-advise graduate and/or undergraduate students and closely collaborate with observers, depending on the project. 

This is a one year term appointment with the option to renew with renewal possible up to 3 years. 

 

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Astronomy, Physics, or a related field obtained prior to appointment date.

Experience with running numerical simulations of gas dynamics processes on high-performance-computing facilities. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with the Athena and/or Athena++ gas dynamics codes is preferred, but not required.
