Job Description

Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (UAI) invites applications for a postdoctoral research position on numerical astrophysics.

The researcher is intended to work on the development of numerical models of protoplanetary and/or circumbinary discs, with special emphasis on disc thermodynamics, the early evolution of planetary systems and observational signatures.

The successful applicant will join the group of Prof. Jorge Cuadra at the UAI campus in Viña del Mar, and will also collaborate with Prof. Matías Montesinos at nearby Universidad de Viña del Mar and Prof. Pablo Benítez-Llambay at UAI in Santiago. Cuadra and Montesinos are part of the Millennium Nucleus for Planet Formation (NPF) collaboration based in the Great Valparaíso and Santiago, while Benítez-Llambay and Cuadra are part of the UAI Physics + Astro group. The postdoc will be encouraged to take part in both groups’ activities.

The position is for two years, with the standard salary for postdocs in Chile (24,240,000,- CLP per year), which allows for a comfortable life standard, and an extra 500,000 CLP per year for medical insurance. It includes a 4.5 million CLP per year budget for travel and other research expenses. While based at UAI, the researcher will have access to different HPC facilities, and also to the 10% Chilean time of telescopes based in the country. An extension is possible, depending on fund availability. The starting date is flexible, but we will favour earlier arrivals.

Viña del Mar is a beach resort city, and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Chile. It is part of the Great Valparaíso area, which features a very active and diverse cultural life. The area is well-connected to the capital Santiago, 120 km away. UAI campus is perched on a hill overlooking the Ocean, and features modern and comfortable facilities surrounded by gardens and native vegetation.

Applicants should submit their material by June 23. A single pdf should include their CV, a brief research statement (max 4 pages), and the contact information of at least two persons willing to write reference letters. We encourage in particular applications from women and other underrepresented groups.
