Postdoctoral Scholar - Radio Astronomy Lab
The Radio Astronomy lab (RAL) at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for two (2) Postdoctoral Scholar positions to work with Professor Aaron Parsons on any area of 21cm cosmology and will interact with his group and the rest of the Berkeley Astronomy community. This position is primarily associated with the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA) targeting cosmic reionization, but includes the opportunity to work on smaller experiments as well. The positions are for one year, full time, with renewal for two more years contingent on funding.
Duties of the position:
The primary responsibilities will be as part of the HERA team, working on instrumentation, data analysis, astrophysical interpretation, and/or simulations. Additional opportunities may be available on smaller experiments, including HYPERION, an interferometer targeting the 21cm global signal, and on legacy data from PAPER, a previous-generation 21 cm tomography experiment.
Qualifications
A PhD or equivalent degree in astronomy, physics, electrical engineering or a related field is required by the start date. At the time of application, the basic minimum qualification is the completion of all degree requirements except the dissertation.
Additional Qualifications (required by start date):
• Record of scientific and/or technical publication.
• Demonstrated communication skills for presentation of results to astronomy and/or engineering professionals.
• Strong work ethic
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with technical and scientific writing
• Familiarity with the astrophysics and cosmology of the high redshift universe
• Familiarity with radio observing and interferometric data analysis
• Familiarity with statistical techniques, machine learning, etc.
• Proficiency in programming in Python and other languages
• Participation in promoting constructive department climate and community
• Experience with mentorship, teaching, and/or public outreach
