The School of Engineering and Sciences at Universidad Diego Portales (UDP) invites applications for its Ph.D. program. The Ph.D. is 4 years long and students are expected to start research activities during their first semester in one of the following research areas: Planetary systems, Stellar and Galactic astronomy, compact objects or Extragalactic astronomy. Specific topics can be found here: https://astronomia.udp.cl/research/research-areas/
The PhD program in Astronomy at UDP is very international, with ~75% of the students coming from abroad (from ~10 different countries), and the official language of the department is English. The Nucleus also hosts leading partners in internationally recognized research centers like the Center for Excellence in Astrophysics and Associated Technologies (CATA), the Millenium Institute of Astrophysics (MAS), the Millenium Nucleus on Young Exoplanets and their Moons (YEMS), and the Millennium Nucleus for the Evolutionary Reconstruction of the InterStellar medium (ERIS). While at UDP, successful candidates will qualify as members of the Chilean community and will be eligible for the 10% access to all observatories in Chile, including ALMA, Gemini South, VLT, Magellan, CTIO, SOAR, and La Silla.
Requirements: Applicants should have an undergraduate and/or master’s degree in Astronomy (or closely related fields) by the start date of the course, full-time commitment, and a good command of the English language.
