Job Description

The University of Toronto invites applications for a postdoctoral research position collaborating with Prof. Maria R. Drout and her group in the areas of time domain or stellar astrophysics. The postdoc will lead and participate in observational or data-driven projects broadly relating to the evolution and fate of stellar systems. Specific areas may include (but are not limited to), supernova, peculiar transients, resolved stellar populations, binary evolution, and EM counterparts to gravitational wave sources.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to be members of SDSS-V, the Young Supernova Experiment, and/or the KMTNet Supernova survey. Other resources include on-going programs with Gemini, Magellan, CFHT, AAT, the VLA, Chandra, Swift, HST, and JWST. Applicants with previous experience with wide-field time domain surveys, multi-wavelength follow-up of transients, stellar populations in large astronomical datasets, stellar spectroscopy, or analysis of high-cadence stellar light curves are particularly encouraged to apply.

The nominal start date is Sept 1, 2023. Earlier or later start dates are negotiable depending on availability of the applicant. The initial appointment will be for two years, renewable for a third year upon satisfactory performance. The position comes with an annual starting salary of CAD $70,000 plus benefits, relocation assistance, and a research allowance. Applicants must have earned a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics or a related field at the time of appointment.

Application instructions: All individuals interested in this position must submit (in PDF format) a cover letter, CV and publication list, brief statement of research interests and qualifications (3 pages maximum), and arrange for three letters of recommendations to be sent directly by the writers. All materials should be submitted on Academic Jobs Online (https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/23818).
