Job Description

National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) announces a Project Assistant Professor position in the Division of Science (DS) (Prof. Ouchi’s group).

The Division of Science (DS) was established in April 2019 as a new division of NAOJ. It aims to develop new growing fields in natural sciences for further advancement of astronomy. We invite applications for a project assistant professor who will conduct an ambitious research project on metal poor galaxies at the early stage of galaxy formation as a member of the group of Professor Masami Ouchi in NAOJ DS. This project aims to identify very low-mass metal poor galaxies and to reveal chemical properties of the inter-stellar medium by deep spectroscopy. A successful candidate is expected to lead a development of a next-generation machine-learning (ML) classifier that finds very low-mass metal poor galaxies from 0.1-1 billion objects in the deep and large-area Subaru/HSC optical images, exploiting the heritage of present-generation Subaru/HSC ML classifiers. The successful candidate is expected to play a leading role in this project by utilizing NAOJ’s large astronomical facilities, such as Subaru telescope, ALMA, and ATERUI II. The responsibilities of this position require continuously demonstrating the leadership and outstanding performance in innovative/international research activities, and also fostering collaborations among NAOJ scientists and Ph.D. students to stimulate productivity of science in NAOJ DS.

The project assistant professor will be employed under an annual salary system and will receive a salary proportionate to the pay grades of a national university assistant professor (paid monthly in 12 equal payments). Under this position, the successful candidate will be provided commuting expenses (up to 55,000 JPY per month) and will be eligible for enrollment in social insurance. Bonus and retirement allowances shall not be paid. Travel and relocation costs to NAOJ will be covered, subject to the travel regulations of NINS (details must be arranged with the administration office). The project assistant professor will receive annual research funds equivalent to those allocated to tenured assistant professors; and are eligible to apply for the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI).

The successful candidate may start the job as early as reasonably possible after selection. The term of employment will be five years after the appointment starts. However, if the successful candidate had been employed as an NINS employee after April 1, 2013, the term will be set so that the total accumulated period of employment does not exceed ten years.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent, and are requested to submit (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) a list of publications (Separate refereed and non-refereed papers with number of citations by ADS), (3) a summary of past research activities, (4) outline of research plans, (5) anticipated start date of the job appointment, and (6) two or more reference letters. These documents must be prepared in English. Please convert the application documents (1)-(5) to separate PDF files (make PDF files with appropriate resolution so that they won’t be too large [file size: up to 10 MB]), and send them via e-mail to;

< apply-dos-proassisprof20191101_AT_nao.ac.jp> (replace _AT_ with @)

As for (6), please ask the reference persons to send the letter as an e-mail attachment to the submission address <apply-dos-proassisprof20191101_AT_nao.ac.jp> (replace _AT_ with @). Applicants are responsible for ensuring that the letters arrive before the application deadline (all reference letters should be written by faculty/staff with tenured positions, and no more than one reference letter will be accepted from the same country). When the application documents are received, a confirmation e-mail will be sent to the applicant. If you do not receive the confirmation from NAOJ within 3 working days, you should contact:

The closing date for applications is 17:00 (Japan Standard Time), Friday, November 1, 2019.

During the selection process, qualified candidates who will proceed into the final selection may be interviewed by the selection committee either via the internet or in person. The expense for the interview will not be covered by NAOJ.
