Tenure-Track Faculty in Computational Astrophysics

University of Georgia / Department of Physics and Astronomy

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Georgia has an opening for a tenure-track assistant professor in Computational Astrophysics with an anticipated start date of August 2020. The Department is expanding into a number of the National Science Foundation’s 10 Big Ideasfor research areas, including Multi-Messenger Astronomy (MMA). We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in neutron star merger/kilonova modeling, hydrodynamical simulations, and related areas. However, outstanding candidates in all fields of computational astrophysics will be considered. Currently the department has 24 faculty members, five of whom work in astronomy and astrophysics. Specialties include radio, UV, and X-ray observations of the interstellar medium, infrared observations of disks, hydrodynamical and spectral simulations of interstellar gas, and atomic and molecular laboratory astrophysics. UGA is uniquely located within short drives to Oak Ridge National Laboratory (NL), Savannah River NL, Marshall Space Flight Center, and Atlanta. The Department has a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education. The new hire will be expected to contribute effectively to our teaching effort and to develop a vigorous, externally funded research program. A Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or related field with at least one year of postdoctoral experience is required. To apply for this position, please upload a cover letter addressed to Prof. Robin Shelton, the Chair of the Search Committee, along with a CV, statements of research and teaching interests, and names and contact information of three references to (http://www.ugajobsearch.com/postings/126115).
