Job Description

The Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics at The University of Chicago has an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to collaborate with Professor Alex Drlica-Wagner on astronomical instrumentation. This position will involve working with instrumentation groups at UChicago and Fermilab to demonstrate the capabilities of novel ultra-low noise Skipper CCDs for applications in optical/near-infrared astronomy with future NASA/DOE missions. The position will involve a combination of laboratory testing, instrument construction, and data collection/analysis using the SOAR Integral Field Spectrograph. There will be ample opportunities to participate in the vibrant research environment at UChicago and Fermilab, including access to the Magellan telescopes at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile.

The position will remain open until filled; however, applicants are strongly encouraged to submit completed applications by October 31, 2022. The appointment can begin immediately and comes with a competitive salary.  The expected duration of the appointment is approximately two years, with the possibility of extension to a third year based on performance.

At the time of appointment, the successful applicant must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, or a related discipline. Candidates with experience in instrumentation, detector development, and/or spectroscopic data reduction are preferred; however consideration will also be given to candidates with backgrounds in experimental physics and observational astronomy.

Complete applications include: a cover letter; a CV including a list of publications; a statement of research interests; and three letters of recommendation.
