Job Description

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the East Asian Observatory (EAO), located in Hilo, Hawai'i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

Duties: Assists visiting astronomers in obtaining high-quality observational data; provides technical, scientific, and logistical support to astronomers before, during, and after their observing runs, and assists with their data analysis. Performs general and specific support of the telescope operations and/or instruments and their development. Undertakes a program of astronomical research, which may or may not be related to using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). 

Education/Training:  PhD from an accredited college or university in Astronomy or related field (in exceptional cases, it may be acceptable to be in the final stages of writing up a PhD thesis).

Experience: At least four (4) years of experience in astronomy and techniques of astronomical measurement and data reduction.

Knowledge: Good working knowledge of submillimeter astronomical observing techniques and/or the construction and operation of submillimeter instrumentation.

Abilities and Skills:  Good written and verbal communication skills and an ability to interact effectively with others. Strong organizational skills.  Close familiarity with astronomical data reduction techniques and possessing good computing skills. 

Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout the duration of employment. May be required to provide a clean driver’s abstract. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission (or be able to drive these vehicles following appropriate training).

Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR/AED (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided). 

Physical and/or Medical Demands: Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet, and pass a post-offer high-altitude medical examination. Must possess proof of high altitude clearance and maintain throughout the duration of employment.
