The Millennium Scientific Initiative’s Institute of Astrophysics (MAS) solicits applications for up to two postdoctoral positions to work on science related to the ATLAS survey and ALeRCE Broker Project. The positions are within the MAS Transients group led by Franz Bauer, Alejandro Clocchiatti, Andres Jordan, and Giuliano Pignata.
MAS is a large interdisciplinary research center composed of astronomers, statisticians, and computer scientists at several Chilean universities. Two key MAS projects are ALeRCE (http://alerce.science/), a public astronomical alert broker which is systematically classifying alerts, and the operational support and science exploitation of the ATLAS 4 telescope (www.fallingstar.com) and related science.
Selected candidates will work on: supporting the daily operation of the ATLAS 4 telescope in Chile, proposing for, organizing, and managing follow-up campaigns (e.g., via our direct involvement in ePESSTO and SOXS, as well as essentially all telescopes installed in Chile), and producing astrophysically relevant results based on the follow-up of the ZTF, ATLAS, and other telescope streams. Work on ALeRCE will focus on Improving our classifiers, expanding our training sets for supernova, variable star, and AGN classes, and inferring physical parameters combining external models with real data.
The starting dates for the positions are negotiable but can begin as early as September 2021. The appointments are nominally for 2+ years, with renewals yearly for up to three years, contingent upon satisfactory progress and availability of funding. The fellow will receive a competitive salary and benefits, as well as a research budget including travel and hardware.
Interested researchers should send a CV (including publication list) and a description of research interests (max of 3 pages) to Prof. A. Clocchiatti (email@example.com)
Applicants should also request for at least 2 letters of recommendation to be sent directly from the writers. We will begin reviewing applications on July 15th, 2021, but late applications could be considered.
ALeRCE related questions can be directed to F. Forster (firstname.lastname@example.org).
ATLAS 4 related questions to A. Clocchiatti (email@example.com).
