Job Description

DETECTOR DEVELOPMENT POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW – ID# 220179.

 

Institute for Astronomy. Non-Regular, Full-Time, Limited Term (two to three (2-3) years in duration), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Institute for Astronomy (IfA), located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $4,051/Mon.

 

Plays a major role in the development of 1k x 1k ME1070 one-megapixel format linear mode avalanche photo-diode (LmAPD) HgCdTe infrared array for ground and space-based astronomy. Performs laboratory characterization, prepares test plan, and conducts radiation testing at UC Davis Cyclotron. Executes on-sky tests of a unique and promising infrared array technology, with dark current rates similar to CCDs, very low readout noise, and high pixel yield using UKIRT. Uses Python and Linux for lab testing and data analysis. Pursues collaborative and independent scientific research work using various Maunakea telescopes. Independently prepares results for publication and writes refereed journal papers. Presents results at scientific conference proceedings. Assists with graduate research by mentoring students at graduate and undergraduate levels. The appointment will be based at the IfA’s Hilo facility with occasional travel to UC Davis in California and to the summit of Maunakea. Will have the opportunity to apply for observing time on all of the telescopes on Maunakea.

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: PhD from an accredited college or university in Astronomy, Physics, Optical Sciences, or related field. (PhD candidates may apply but must submit evidence of PhD completion upon hire). EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience in instrumentation. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Working knowledge of astronomical instrumentation in the field of infrared astronomy or detector physics. Ability to analyze data from infrared cameras or similar instruments. Proficiency in Python, or similar programming language, as well as familiarity with Linux. Demonstrated capacity for independent work and capable of conducting independent research in a lively group. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the UH Title IX training within twelve (12) months from date of hire. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.
