Job Description

Postdoctoral Researcher or Senior Postdoctoral Researcher (Physics – CALET)

College of Science – Calorimetric Electron Telescope - CALET

Louisiana State University

Job Responsibilities:

The experimental high energy astrophysics group at Louisiana State University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher or Senior Postdoctoral Researcher. The group is currently participating in the flight operations of the CALET electron calorimeter experiment on the International Space Station, including analysis of high-energy cosmic rays, astrophysical gamma-rays, solar energetic particles, as well as space and geomagnetic “weather’. In addition, LSU serves as the central CALET data center for the U.S. collaborating institutions. The successful candidate will be expected to take a leading role in one or more of the CALET scientific topics.

Postdoctoral Researcher

Candidate will work on the CALET Space Station electron/gamma ray experiment, performing Monte Carlo simulations of instrument performance, processing and analyzing high-energy cosmic ray, astrophysical gamma-ray, solar energetic particle, geomagnetic, and “space weather” flight data, contribute to writing of scientific papers, and carrying out the duties as needed of a member of the CALET science collaboration.

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in Experimental Astrophysics, Experimental Particle Physics or related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications:

Good code development and data analysis skills; experience with C++, ROOT, Python, IDL, FITS, HDF, demonstrated understanding of the interaction of particles and photons with matter, cosmic ray and/or gamma ray instrumentation experience, previous experience with a space flight high energy astrophysics experiment.

Special Qualifications:

May involve travel to collaborating institutions in Japan, and Italy, calibration campaigns at accelerators in the U.S. and abroad, and trips to scientific meetings.

Senior Postdoctoral Researcher

Candidate will work on the CALET Space Station electron/gamma ray experiment, performing Monte Carlo simulations of instrument performance, processing and analyzing high-energy cosmic ray, astrophysical gamma-ray, solar energetic particle, geomagnetic, and “space weather” flight data, contribute to writing of scientific papers, and carrying out the duties as needed of a member of the CALET science collaboration.

In addition, a senior Postdoctoral researcher will be expected to lead development of at least one major CALET scientific topic including mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, attending and presenting analysis results at CALET collaboration meetings, and lead writing of scientific papers.

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in Experimental Astrophysics, Experimental Particle Physics or related discipline and three years of postdoctoral experience.
