Job Description

The Cosmology Group within the Physics Department at the University of California, Davis invites applications for two postdoctoral positions in astrophysics.

One postdoc will pursue independent research in collaboration with Prof. Andrew Wetzel on theoretical/computational modeling of galaxy formation, with preference for the areas of near-field cosmology, galactic archaeology, the Milky Way and the Local Group, dwarf galaxies, star/globular clusters, and dark-matter models. We particularly seek candidates with experience in high-performance computing and cosmological simulations. The postdoc will have access to high-performance computing facilities at UC Davis and >100 million CPU-hours of allocations on NSF and NASA supercomputing facilities, as well as the state-of-the-art FIRE simulations, including the Latte suite of Milky Way-mass galaxies. Send questions regarding this position to [email protected].

One postdoc will pursue independent research in collaboration with Prof. Tucker Jones on observational studies of galaxy formation and evolution. Candidates interested in chemical evolution, the circumgalactic medium, feedback and gas flows, and dwarf galaxy evolution are especially encouraged to apply. Experience with spectroscopic and multi-wavelength data analysis is desirable. Send questions regarding this position to [email protected].

UC Davis is an institutional member of LSST and TMT, with access to Keck and Lick Observatories. Davis is an hour from the San Francisco Bay Area and two hours from skiing/hiking in the Sierra Nevada mountains and Lake Tahoe.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in astrophysics or related field by the start date. The appointment will be for up to three years via renewable one-year terms, contingent upon performance. Salary, benefits, and research funds are competitive. The starting date is negotiable, nominally September 2018.

Applicants should send (1) a cover letter, which also indicates which position you are applying for (2) curriculum vitae, (3) publication list, and (4) description of past and future research (up to 4 pages), all in a single PDF, to Lynn Loftin Mayo at [email protected]. Also arrange for at least 3 letters of reference to be sent directly from the writers to the same address. For full consideration, apply by December 15.

UC Davis is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer with strong commitment to achieving diversity among its faculty/staff.
