Job Description

The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at The University of Chicago invites applications for the Provost's Fellowship. We seek to include in our department scientists who will lead creative research programs aligned with the broad interests of our colleagues, and who have a desire to participate in the vibrant intellectual life of the Department and the University. This funding program supports early-career scholars from diverse backgrounds, including groups historically underrepresented in faculty appointments, such as women, black/African American, American Indian or Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino scholars.

The successful candidate will be appointed as a Provost's Fellow for a three-year term, during which they will be able to pursue their independent research interests under the mentorship of the departmental faculty. The expectation is that the Fellow will use their appointment and the resources at the University to establish themselves as an emerging leader in their particular field of research. The Fellow will automatically be considered for promotion to a tenure-track Assistant Professor appointment in the department at the end of the fellowship period. To aid in this effort, the Fellow will meet regularly with the Chair and a Faculty Mentoring Committee during which they can discuss issues that arise as they navigate their early career and develop their research program.

A competitive salary will be offered, plus benefits. Research funds are also available. Consideration of applications will begin 30 November 2018, and short-listed applicants will be contacted to schedule on-campus interviews in early 2019.

Applicants will be early in their careers, with a Ph.D. in hand by the time of the appointment and without a tenure track appointment at another institution. Start date is negotiable, with a target of October 1, 2019.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae with a list of publications, and a statement of research interests. Three letters of recommendation are required. Applications can be submitted through the University's Academic Careers website academiccareers.uchicago.edu/applicants/Central?quickFind=55805 . A statement of teaching interests will be required upon consideration for appointment to assistant professor.
